Hyde Park's Longest Poem
Is Hyde Park a fruit or a vegetable? On Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. I will be at the Hyde Park Farmers Market working on Hyde Park’s Longest Poem with the Indie City Writers and the help of people passing by. In addition to the poem, we will be telling people about our writers collective on the South Side, and selling books with a portion of the proceeds going to Indie City Writers. It’s a great place to pick up signed copies of my books, “A Storm of Stories” and “Painting With Fire,” as well as M.L. Kennedy’s fantastic books, “The Mosquito Song” and “Thanksgiving for Werewolves.”
In case you aren’t familiar with the Indie City Writers, I founded the group in 2015 with the help of co-organizers M.L. Kennedy and Kayla Gordon. We do workshops, expert author talks, prompt writing, critiquing and live-lit performances. The goal is to strengthen the unique community of writers on Chicago’s South Side. I wanted a community to help writers create, refine, share and learn and not get stuck in any one aspect of the writing and publishing process. Writing can be solitary and writing groups have always have so important to me, a lifeline and an important part of the creative process. Our group is booming, but I’m excited to get the word out even more.
I’m also nervous, because we need a lot of people to help us write 98 feet of poetry. So please stop by, pick up some produce and add a few lines! If you want me to be less nervous, you can RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/events/230808077319248/
